The cultural diversity of Malawi is rich and nuanced with traditional knowledge, beliefs, and practices. This project seeks to delve into Malawian cultural astronomy, aiming to unravel the intricate connections between cosmogony, celestial bodies' cultural significance, and their practical applications in agriculture.

Research Questions

How does the cosmogony presented in the creation myth correlate with astronomical concepts, and what insights does this offer into the cultural understanding of the cosmos?

What is the cultural significance of celestial bodies, like stars, moon, planets or constellations, within traditional knowledge, belief systems, ceremonies and practices?

What role does star observation play in the agricultural calendar of, and how is this knowledge integrated into decision-making processes for sowing, cultivation, and harvest timing?

Methodology

1. Fieldwork and Ethnographic Research:

   âœ¦ Immerse researchers in Malawian communities to observe and participate in cultural practices.

   âœ¦ Conduct interviews with cultural elders, and community members to gather qualitative data.

 

2. Archival and Document Analysis:

   âœ¦ Review existing literature, creation myths, and historical documents to contextualize cultural beliefs and practices.

   âœ¦ Analyze historical agricultural calendars and any documented connections between star observations and farming activities.

Expected Outcomes

1. Cultural Astronomy Resources
   âœ¦ Develop resources documenting the correlation between creation myths and astronomical concepts, showcasing the diverse cultural perspectives within Malawi.
